Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice is an Affiliate of Earth Charter International at the University for Peace in Costa Rica.

Recognize that peace is the wholeness created by right relationships with oneself, other persons, other cultures, other life, Earth, and the larger whole of which all are a part.

The Florida Earth Charter Initiative is a community-wide conversation to increase awareness of local and global education, inspiration and action for a sustainable future.  Every person, every family, every congregation, every community organization can play a part.

January 2016

The Florida Earth Charter Initiative starts the year with activities to support the interfaith climate movement.  We invite you to participate as an individual or congregation.

  • January 9 - FREE Pachamama Symposium at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville (UUFG), 9:30 - 12:00 followed by lunch at Sandy's (less than $10).  

  • January 10 - last day to register for ONLINE Pachamama Game Changer Intensive, a seven-week virtual course with local discussion group at UUFG. 

  • Starting Sunday, January 24, 4:00-5:30 - Weekly discussion group for Game Changer Intensive at UUFG.  Seven weeks, sharing insights and resources from the Pachamama Alliance, interfaith climate movement and Florida Earth Charter Initiative.

  • Sunday January 17 - World Religion Day - 2:00 - 4:00 in 4th Floor meeting room, Alachua County Library Headquarters, 401 East University Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32601.  TOPIC:  Spiritual Dimensions of Climate Change, with interfaith panel of speakers.  Hosted by Interfaith Climate Group.

  • Jan 28-30 - Interfaith Climate Action Conference in Orlando.  building community for physical and spiritual needs in a changing climate. REGISTER NOW

Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice is proud to present



    Our first community-wide Earth Charter Conversation engaged more than 30 individuals and organizations in discussion of how they are bringing the Earth Charter to life in North Central Florida.  These are some of the results:

    • TRILOGY SCHOOL - High school students played and evaluated the Earth Charter Game.  They are planning an Earth Charter Family Game Night and will host an Earth Charter Expo in April.
    • UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF GAINESVILLE - Activities included an Earth Charter Labyrinth Walk, children's activities at PINERIDGE COMMUNITY CENTER and a musical program.
    • GAINESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL POETRY CLUB will write poems on the social and environmental issues addressed in the Earth Charter
    • CURIOSITY HACKED - Youth ages 8-14 played the Earth Charter Game and are making an Earth Charter World in Minecraft.
    • FLORIDA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY is exploring possibilities for a traveling interactive pop-up exhibit based on the Earth Charter.
    • FUTUREFLASH! Storytellers and Making the Game Club empower youth and adults to grow the Earth Charter from vision to reality.
    • GAINESVILLE JUNIOR BROADWAY TROUPE plans a musical presentation for Earth Day.
    • HIPPODROME STATE THEATRE is considering a community outreach program to engage youth in Earth Charter themes.
    • FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIVERSITY is collaborating on the Earth Charter Digital Storytelling Project.
    • INTERFAITH CLIMATE ACTION GROUP will host the Earth Charter Anniversary Celebration in June 2016
    • INTERFAITH CLIMATE ACTION NETWORK OF FLORIDA is developing a series of courses with discussion groups that include Earth Charter principles and related resources from the world's religions, including scripture and recent climate statements.
    • FLORIDA COALITION FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE is hosting a series of workshops and activities to develop the 2016 FLORIDA EARTH CHARTER INITIATIVE.

    Earth Charter Game

    We've played the Earth Charter Game with schools and community groups.  Produced by Harmonia na Terra in Brazil, the game is suitable for ages 9 and up. Players collaborate to care for the environment and the community of life on Earth. In the process, they practice Earth Charter principles for a sustainable, just and peaceful world.     Illuminating the Earth Charter Show!

    In our inter-generational TV-style game show, players document ways that individual members and organizations as a whole are working for a sustainable, just and peaceful future. Short video interviews, submitted to our website, illustrate the many ways people in Alachua and Bradford counties are living the principles of the Earth Charter. All projects due by November 15. Winning entries will be announced in December and will be included in the 2015 Gift for the Earth, Our Home.

    Sunday, June 28 - 15th Anniversary of the Earth Charter!

    On June 28, the Interfaith Climate Group and Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice hosted a celebration of Earth Charter +15: One Earth Community, One Common Destiny. Mary Walch, Ph.D., described ways that Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Meyers uses the Earth Charter to guide their curriculum and service-learning projects in the community. Paul Still explained how the FCPJ Sustainable Living Center in Hampton serves as facilitation and demonstration center for the Florida Earth Charter Initiative. Sue Blythe introduced the community-wide program for 2015-16, Illuminating the Earth Charter: Education, Inspiration and Action for a Sustainable Future. Dave Finnigan offered Climate Change Is Elementary as a tool for engaging students, teachers and families in creating a clean and green future. For more information, contact Sue Blythe at

    Sunday June 21 - UUFG and the Earth Charter

    UUFG is supporting the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice community-wide Earth Charter initiative, offering several activities for their congregation through the Social Justice Circle. Sue Blythe presented the Earth Charter as a tool for building community in a changing climate. She shared her experience at Earth Charter International at the University for Peace.

    Friday, June 5 - FutureFlash! Project and the Earth Charter Initiative

    The FutureFlash! Project empowers young people -- and those who care about their future -- to make the change they want to see in the world. The FutureFlash! Climate Challenge engages the whole community in project-based education, inspiration and action for a sustainable, just and peaceful future. This will be the centerpiece of the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice Earth Charter Initiative. Friday, June 5 - Covered-dish dinner at 7:00 followed by program at 8:00, Gainesville Baha'i Center, 4451 NW 19th Street, Gainesville.

    Statewide Earth Charter Initiative of the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice

    The Earth Charter was launched in the year 2000 at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2015 Earth Charter International, at the University for Peace in Costa Rica, is celebrating the 15th Anniversary with a year-long series of courses, webinars and contests.

    The Earth Charter Team of the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice is sponsoring a statewide initiative for Earth Charter +15. It will include these components:

    1. Earth Charter Affiliation - signed agreement with Earth Charter International, based on bullet points (in previous email).

    2. Newsletter Articles - a monthly article will educate readers about different aspects of the Earth Charter, featuring resources, including FutureFlash! Project, and ideas for local activities.

    3. Earth Charter events in at least three areas in Florida, including Gainesville/Alachua and Bradford Counties. These will be initiated by individuals, arising organically from their work with local individuals and organizations. - Sue, Interfaith Climate Group - Kathy, library and/or political group - (possibly) Judy, to be determined.

    4. Development of the FutureFlash! Project, based on the Earth Charter. Sue Blythe will maintain fiscal sponsorship with EarthAction Network, and work with FCPJ to provide activities to support the statewide Earth Charter initiative. These could include: Family Workshops and Retreats Teacher Workshops Fundraising Events to benefit both FFP and FCPJ Grants When funds are available to remunerate Sue Blythe for services, she will step off the Board.

    5. FCPJ will promote FutureFlash! activities through the newsletter and at events.
